BOSL Annual General Meeting Reminder

To All BOSL Members:

Just a reminder that our Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday, October 25th at 7pm sharp.  Location is still TBA.  We will advise you of the location by early next week.

Our call for nominations to be on the 2013 Board of Directors has yielded 9 individuals.  As such, there will be no need for an election.  Your 2013 Board of Directors will consist of John Andersen, Brian Blume, Scot Cameron, Brent Craigie, Michael Ciccone, Larry Gagnon, Jason Gerrity, Jim Hindley and Dale LatendresseThank you gentlemen for stepping forward to volunteer your time and efforts.  Knowing everyone on this list as I do, it is safe to say that the league is in very good hands going forward.

There were no submissions brought forward with regard to By-Law changes, however, there are a number of rule change submissions that will be discussed and voted on at the meeting.  A few rules of engagement though.

1) These rule submissions were brought forth by individuals in the league and not by the Board of Directors.  So please keep this in mind when discussing the potential changes at the AGM (i.e. please show respect to those that put the submissions forward regardless if their ideas differ from yours)

2) There will be a brief discussion/debate prior to each submission being voted on.  Motions to re-word any of the submissions will be considered and voted on if necessary before a vote on the rule change itself.  To keep things moving, we will limit the discussion per rule change to 5 minutes so if you have a strong opinion one way or the other, please be as brief and concise as possible when you have the floor.

3) Attendance at the AGM is crucial.  Simply put, if 25 guys show up (i.e. roughly 10% of the league), then those 25 will have a very big say as to what passes/does not pass.  So please make every effort to attend and let’s get the attendance up and over the usual 45 or 50 that show up every year.

In closing, I will send out a full agenda 3 or 4 days before the AGM.  But for now, please read the rule change submissions here.

Thanks
Mike Porkolab

Year End Tournament

To All BOSL Players/Families:

It seems like just yesterday that we were playing our first game of the year and, in the blink of an eye, the 2012 season has now come to a close.

First and foremost, a VERY big thank you to our Tournament Director, Larry Gagnon, for putting on such a fantastic closing weekend.  Your decision on Saturday morning to push the games to a Noon starting time was instrumental in the weekend running so smoothly and your tireless efforts this weekend made it a weekend to remember for all of us.  Also a special thank you to both Bill and Jean Gagnon for running the show in the bunker and to all of those players/umpires that volunteered their time throughout the weekend – your help was both needed and very much appreciated.

Congratulations to our Andy Smith Award winners, Big Drum.  It is very rare that the Dave Little Award winners (1st Place in Regular Season) also win the Year-End Tournament – a difficult achievement to pull off to say the least.  Scott, Joe and their entire team proved that they were, in fact, the best team of 2012.  What can you say about the Door Dudes?  They are proof that no matter where you are seeded in your POD (they were a #4 seed), that anything can, and usually does happen in the BOSL when an entire team pulls together at the right time.  Well done Scott, Kevin and your teammates!  Our very deserving Consolation Championship winners, Great Lakes Hydraulics, also had a tremendous weekend and won a hard fought final over perennial tournament power house, Jerry’s Automotive.  Congratulations to Derek, Lee, Doug and Dave on leading your teams’ to success this weekend.

Just a friendly reminder to visit our website to register for the 2013 season.   Our league fees have been drastically reduced on all levels and, as most of you know by now, we are currently transitioning to a fully automated/online environment where player applications/payments are concerned – so please take advantage of the one-time discounts in this area by registering and paying online by September 30th.

I would also like to once again call out for those that are interested in being a captain and/or board member in 2013 to please send me an e-mail at your earliest convenience – mike.p@l3mfreightsolutions.com – Our AGM is on October 25th and it is at this meeting that our 2013 Board of Directors will be elected.  Shortly after (i.e. November/December), the decision on who our 16 sets of captains will be for the 2013 season will be made.  The more options the better in this area.

Our annual Awards Banquet/Dance is fast approaching on September 22nd.  If you have not already done so, please contact your team captains for tickets.  We are getting very close to a sell out, so you will need to act quickly.

In closing, thank you once again to all those that helped to make this past season such a huge success both on and off the field.  It won’t be long until we are lacing up our cleats and taking the field in May.  Until then...

Yours truly,

Mike Porkolab
BOSL President

Registration Savings

It is with much excitement that we introduce our new fee structure for next year.  As well, we have introduced a new referral program where you are eligible for a $20 QB Gift certificate for every new member that you recruit to the League!

1) We have reduced our early registration fee to $250, a savings of $20.  To qualify, register with accompanying online payment by October 31 this year or download a paper application and include a cheque dated October 31!  But wait, see the next option below!!!

2) As a thank you for helping us in our transition to a completely on-line environment we have a SPECIAL ONE TIME DEAL!!!!  Register with accompanying online payment by September 30 this year and pay only $230!  That's right, $230.  This price is our way of saying thank you for reducing the many hours it takes to process paper and cheque applications every year.

3) $275 after October 31.  February 1 post-dated cheques accepted at this rate.

4) Each current member will receive a $20 QB's gift certificate when a new player (never played in our League before) joins and stays in the League until at least the mid-sason tournament (our traditional refund cut-off period).  These certificates will be handed out at the mid-season tournament.

All registrations need to get into our online database – so by registering and paying online yourself you are saving us the work! Thanks.

BOSL at Half-Time

That’s 17 games through 2012 and not much has changed. Last season we lost Chappy (JJ) to an injury – hit in the head by a 144 core running to first. This season we lost Jason Gerrity (also on JJ) to another 144-core injury – running to second. At least he got further than Chappy did but it’s obviously open season on JJ players – maybe it’s the bright uniforms? I think they have a team batting helmet now... The doc recommended rest and relaxation for Jason - now recovering at some exotic beach for a few weeks so I’m writing to you in his absence.

Auction for Charity
100% of the proceeds of these donated auction items goes to our charity of the season – Community Living Burlington. So far we’ve raised at least $240 for them so if you have any crap lying around that you think someone is crazy enough to want – let us know and we will try auctioning it off. Current item is a foursome at Tyandaga Golf and upcoming items include Ti-Cat tickets for a BC game (donated by Porky), a twosome at Muskoka Bay Golf (donated by Brent Craigie), Furnace/Duct Cleaning gift cert (donated by Amerispec) and a Carline Muffler Exhaust repair gift cert. Thanks everyone. How do I get in to bid? Fast way if you forgot to keep your ID/PW is to email me for your username then click on the player login off the homepage and reset your p/w. It’s too easy.

Slo-Pitch Players can’t Golf
This is precisely why we are auctioning off the foursome at Tyandaga so that you can learn to play before our golf day! The BOSL Golf Day is coming (August 18, 2012 ) so please click here to register yourself and friends so that we can properly plan out your day.  Rumour has it we will have prizes for the Worst Combined Score and for the Worst Dressed and maybe even the Closest to Mark Flood’s team score... but other than that it’s just fun to all go out for a day together.

Weather or Not
We don’t have floods or tornados – just a little burnt grass and a few 7-inning games – we introduced 7 inning max games on some of the hot days as a precaution. We will let all Captains know in advance as usual and post that news on the website in advance. Thanks for your patience as running a league is never easy or perfect. (no-show players, no-show umps, rain or heat or lights not working, bugs) if it’s not one thing there’s a new challenge and you’ve been great helping us all work together through it.

Special Olympics Favour
OK great so you have kept reading – thanks! The Special Olympics players have asked us if there are any BOSL players that would like to act as Umpires for their ball tournament happening at Sherwood on Saturday, July 21. Just a couple games with no pay but it would look so good on your resume!! No experience necessary. Just looking for friendly people to join them. Each volunteer will only be asked to do 2 games (i.e. roughly 3 or 4 hours of your time)

Awards
Don’t forget that we always celebrate the end of every season with a boring awards show, a fantastic dinner and dance. This year will be the first ever Live Band at the awards show. They will probably get started playing after we’ve all handed out the awards to Big Drum and CBBR J- more on the dance/awards night later. The band is called Banned From Heaven and they are at http://bannedfromheaven.com/ -- seriously guys this band is amazing and they just make it a lot of fun for everyone – can’t wait!! We need new awards though – I personally would like to see an award for the Most Forgiving Pitcher and possibly an award for the top 10 slowest runners in the league!! ideas? Click here...

Thanks guys - Scot Cameron (worst odds-bookie ever)

To All BOSL Members:

For those veteran BOSL members, you know of our league’s contributions to many charities over the years and hope that our new members join us in embracing this tradition.

At the 2011 AGM , the league membership provided feedback that rather than multiple charities with predetermined targets, the league should focus on a single charity and endeavour to do our utmost to raise what we can. The BOSL board has adopted this feedback and as always is looking for suggestions from within our membership for worthy causes (I have already received a couple suggestions!).

I would ask that you forward any suggestions directly to me at news@bosl.ca, with the name & brief description of the charity, by January 22nd.

Yours truly,

Mike Porkolab
BOSL President
