How did McCleary get stuck
with me? Don't they usually draft
guys who can't hit and catch?

Odds to Win the Mid-Season Tourney

May 31, 2014 - the Tipster...

The views, opinions & predictions of this prognosticator are not necessarily those of BOSL, its executive or anyone related to Larry Gagnon. Don’t take this seriously as you know I don’t… Last year at our Mid-Season Tournament, Judge & Jury (20/1) defeated RONA (14/1) in our Championship match and L3M Freight Solutions (50/1) defeated Carline Muffler (50/1) to take the Consolation Championship -- I picked L3M and Carline as threats for the Consolation and L3M did it on Clancy's pitching and team hitting. Biggest surprise in the championships were the holes in the pavilion roof courtesy of Voodoo Vollans with JJ.

Team Odds Prognostication
DD Door Dudes
(Maroon)
1/1 Captains Darryl Ford (7) and Ron Evinou (5) weren't at the game when we played them and although it was close, they still beat us! Shows you this team can do it without leadership :-) Every player on DD is hitting over 500 with HR power coming from Rick McKay (7), Richard Noble (4), Lee DeDauw, Gary Henrich, Mike Boyle and Paul Allard. As strong as the Blue teams seem to be, my money has to be on Door Dudes to win it all.
BOHC BOHC
(Dark Blue)
2/1 Remember when Hector Hong was the only player that tested the land speed record? If we held a race between all BOHC players here I'm sure 4 or 5 of them would be right with him so forget about throwing these guys out at first base. Captain Chris Rogers is batting close to 1000 with 4 HRs. More power from Stephen Moore (4), Gary Verdone (4), and Tom Bertin (1) Hector has 1 HR as well but it was probably inside the park. BOHC will rival the Dudes for the championship
CBBR Coldwell Banker Burnhill
(Blue)
4/1 Joe Celi and Chris Burr have been putting on a hitting clinic with their near-perfect batting averages and future hall-of-famer Steve Koritko has delivered big-time with HRs and RBIs - I'm sure Captains Todd Parker and Chris Burr are satisfied with their #1 draft pick. Pitchers beware of the experienced guys Jason Gerrity and John Rivard - speed, power and they hit anywhere they like! Pitcher Frank Simpson is all class and you know if they aren't happy with the calls they have their own umpire! We really don't stand a chance.
JS JumpStart/Cdn Tire
(Red)
2/1 It must be nice for JS to be able to sit back with absolute confidence in their pitching staff, John Gibson and knuckle-baller Larry Gagnon. You would think that the rest of the team just needs to get on base and let Doug Vollans (8) knock it out but it's never all about one player. Captain Nick Popovacki is leading by example with 4 HR batting 800! Right with him are Jeff Armour, co-captain Rick Fox and Dave Holubeshen. And of course Angelo Musitano is still the league's best 2nd baseman - probably why they are among the best in Runs against! Nice of Larry to contribute his one HR... I'd say any one of these top 6 teams could win it all - its going to be a fun tournament!
IT Independent Traffic
(Blue)
4/1 Roy Jones is on pace to win the overall HR title and smash his personal all-time best. Bill Johnson and Ron Waller (who knew?) are hitting in the 700s and Ron is pitching extremely well. Mike Chedore already has his one HR for the season so he might be tapped out. Captains Scott Sinclair and Roy Jones may have been throwing darts in assembling this group but IT has proven itself with Runs and has great Defense. Should point out that this team leads us all in Runs Against - everyone dives in the OF - we could start a "Plays of the Week" and just keep the camera here.
DC Deeth & Company
(Light Blue)
10/1 Defending Champion Captain Peter Afelskie and new Captain Chris Bateman went with the experience of proven players - Richard Krummenacher, Rob Green, Mike Starr, Don Hunter and Peter Dovey. What they didn't know was their new Rookie players Neil Haslam, Mark Rankin and Mike Maycock would be hitting so well. Wait did I leave someone's name out - Thanks for bringing in your son Gerry! :-) This is the team that leads the league in Runs. None of them are in the HR leader race but the fact is these guys are quality people and great players. Great job captains - I'm sure this team is having a blast!
CM Carline Muffler
(Blue)
15/1 Everyone knows Scott McIntyre is a first round pick and he's proving his worth batting almost 1000. Pitcher Chad Blackmore and Michael Procter are leading the team in HRs. Captains John Andersen and Michael Kitchen are batting 700s along with Randy Kobryn. With so many great hitters and such high averages - why does CM have the lowest Runs? Defense and Pitching are good so it looks like the team will need to re-jig the batting order to get those runs across. CM made it to the show last mid-season!
ZOLO WWW.ZOLO.CA
(Orange)
10/1 You can't say that Kevin Roseneck and Kevin Elkins aren't leading by example! KR is leading in HRs and Batting 1000 while KE is near 700 and bashing them out. Let's face it - every season we have to fear the Kevin's team and KR is voted most frustrating pitcher each year. Nice surprise with new guy Roger Graham hitting so well (almost 800) and looks like married life hasn't hurt Rod McLeod's performance (700). Jerry Elliott and Colin Kavanagh are also hitting well. ZOLO needs Buzz Houle to get to the game though.
VF Vanderhout Flooring
(White)
15/1 Captain's Stephen Bero and Mike Gibbs are lading the team in batting and in HRs with 4 each. Mike Veerman is hitting 800 vs brother Brian Veerman at 600 but at least Brian has one HR. As we know Mike does usually hit one HR each season but VA shouldn't hold its breath waiting... Mike "Moose" Wright is doing great at almost 700 with a couple HRs - shoulder must be healing up. Jeff Horton, Murray Alley and Steve Rowsell are hitting well. Eric Schmidt and Jim Moriarty are over-due - can you fix their slumps?
BG Battlefield Graphics
(Green)
25/1 Last year's defending champ Brent Craigie along with co-captain David DeSantis have put together a great team here. BG is a sleeper team sitting at just 500 - the runs will come... Batter to be afraid of include Paul McGrath, Chris Adam, Rob Wagner, Phil Osfolk, Rocco Lombardo, Brian Bishop and Michael Ciccone - that's a long list - they're all close to 700! Rocco and John Rotondo are both in the Pitching leaderboard. No reason why BG can't win it... they aren't a long-shot by any means.
TL Tailored Living
(Black)
30/1 Andrew McDonnell is capable of triple plays, season-leading HRs and very high batting avg. He's also a very positive and fun team player! We're lucky to have him in BOSL as are captains Michael Drexler and Kevin Gilligan to have picked him up. Chuck Hines, John Stewart and Mark Flood are bats to watch out for. Rookie Ryan Carson was a nice pickup hitting in the 700s as well. TL has the pitching but maybe its defense that needs to turn around. Oh wait - here it is - Jim Hindley and Derek Lutz are in a HUGE slump - that's this team's problem.
VA Verwey Automotive
(Yellow)
40/1 New acquisition Chris Mann should help VA in the Runs For department. Neil Marsh is proving his rookie season was no mistake, leading the team with 7HRs and batting 800+ (must be getting more sleep now so his number can only go up). Brian Bodnarok, Don Blore, Ed Medeiros and Ed Dekker are the batting threats here. John Vinnai is doing a fantastic pitching job. This is a great team with a very good infield that is under-performing.
L3M L3M Freight Solutions
(Grey)
50/1 Last years Champions won the Consolation final and they are just as much a threat again this season with Captain Tom Clancy pitching and John Bowers power. New guy Bill Misener leads the team in HRs (also batting 1000) with help from Randy Dake and Peter Conick. For those of you that don't know Randy, he's been the class of the league for 22 years and usually bats 900. Rick Cudmore and Trevor Britton are batting 800s. Now if the captains can just get Mike Drexler Jr. a batting coach they will be contending. Everyone please say hello to Hall of Famer Dave Little when you play L3M (hitting a respectable 500)
ME McCleary Electric
(Grey)
50/1 Ron Vandermeulen is usually in the top 5 pitching stats and his team is always a championship contender. Co-captain Jeff Palmer was 4 for 5 against us last game but Joe Gallant leads the team in batting. Not a lot of HRs here but they hit the fence a lot. Speedy David Wetherald, Ethan Wittig and Dean Soucie are contributing with the bats. Norm Poyton and Dave Porteous are on the fence at 500. This team has strong pitching and character and if history repeats - don't write them off.
CST CST Marketing
(Purple)
100/1 Dale and Don's CST Marketing team is struggling along in last spot but they never lose by much... last two games by just one run. Captain Dale Latendresse is leading the team by example with 1HR and 800+ avg. New guys Darryl Holditch and David Kent are contributing with HRs while Steve Leyland, Jeff Teolis John Laursen and Grant Anderson are all over 700. Yet to see anything from co-captain Don Radke - could be just saving it for the tourney. Its great to see Byron McCormack returning to his former glory hitting just under 700. Now if they could just win these close games their fortunes will turn
JA Jerry's Automotive
(Dark Blue)
200/1 Mike Porkolab finally joined the HR race with his first... hopefully we get to play ME in the tourney since Ron is the only pitcher we seem to take deep. Other power comes from Dave Rombough (5) and Mike Silva (2). Kerry Close, Wayne McSpadden, Jon Rideout and Mike McFadden are doing great as well hitting in the 600s. This team is due to string a few hits together and move up the ranks but just got its first W last week. So it's looking up.

Please do not contact Michael Ciccone, Tournament Director with any concerns about these odds - they are what they are :-)
