The warm weather, the summer patios with beers and baseball is back, this year is better than ever. With the Jays close to mathematically eliminated, the Leafs already golfing, it is now time to focus on the real season, Oldtimers Softball!

Pitchers and Catchers have reported, Opening day is just around the corner, so we need some Tipster Preseason Tips, Projections and Observations, so let’s start! Hopefully you have a laugh.
Baseball 365 - Expected Record – 16 -16 -2
With the sponsorship from the best Baseball store in town, this team will be well outfitted. Jamie and David as team captains might be relying on some juiced bats from 365 as the lineup lacks some of the top 15 HR hitting power. They are looking to improve on a top 6 finish last year, they had solid top defense and good pitching. Rumour has it they were working on conditioning in the off season, mostly utilizing a beer lifting regimen.

Captains Al Fochuk and Hector Hong demand perfection in their players, but maybe not in their drafting unfortunately. Rumour is they have loaded up on 3rd basemen this season, so we expect some dissension in the ranks at some point. Sinclair will be flamethrowing from the mound and the key acquisition of Mark Riley has the Tipster wondering…is it the Mark Riley of yesteryear? This team could be dangerous. Rumor is the off-season was mostly focused on Dental health, as they wanted to make sure they had some nice teeth for the end of year sponsor picture.

Another new team and if we can judge by the name, they might not be focused on baseball as their primary game. Captains Erwin and Chris have been doing this for a while and they have drafted a balanced team skill, speed, power and fielding. The real question might be the health of Neil, if he is in mid -season form, I think this team could be unstoppable. One of the best pitchers in the game, a solid defense, this team can do it all. We will be counting on Erwin and Chris to mess it all up, we have seen what happens when teams try to sign aging veterans, but I think we will see a good year from these guys.

Always usually a powerhouse, this team was a better than average team, but had an even run differential, so they are back to fundamentals. Captains Mike and Brian will be looking to get more out of this re-tooled roster and they seem to have employed a Moneyball strategy. They do not seem to have any of the top 15 power hitters and are focusing on defense and average. Rumor is they have previous knowledge of the 150 ft cone Rule, as they drafted Koopman, who would exemplify a Moneyball draft selection with the new rules. Let’s wait and see how this shakes out, in today’s game we need power, so I am seeing a .500 team here.

The Tipster thinks yes, but the off-season rumours were there was potential salary cap holdouts, so they might come into the season a little cold.

The regular season leaders last year are looking to stay on top. The Tipster sees a fall from grace, they have drafted a solid team, but it is hard to go back-to-back regular season league champs. Salary cap concerns have forced them to make some tough lineup decisions. Rumour is many of them were attending the Tom Brady roast and some players got into an altercation with some paparazzi, so we will see if there are suspensions looming.
Gamble Plumbing – Expected Record 23-9-2
Team captains Nate Gamble and Scott Clark look like they have assembled quite a team. Scott is a 5-tool player and Nate is a perennial 5th round pick somehow, which makes for great value in the captain seats. We know they run a new AI analytics team, so this draft looks to have gone well. Rumor is they are one of the pre-season Vegas favorites, but we think there is a likely chance of some heroics and fireworks this season. Hopefully resulting in another successful regular season. Maybe not in the tournaments though. A team to watch one way or another.

Captains Brad and Tim have come out and said this is the greatest team they have ever assembled. We think they meant drinking wise, but we will see their performance on field and at Qbs and check in on their progress throughout the year. We think they come out of the gate slowly and get better. Rumour is this team is up for sale in the off season as Brad and Tim want to transition to a more corn-hole focused summer. This likely affects team morale.

Randy and Mark told the media at the beginning of spring training that they hope this team can compete for some tournament wins. We aren’t so sure unfortunately. Coop and Kyle will look to continue their winning streak as the captains with the most QBs winning performances. Anyone drafted onto this team will have a blast. This team isn’t just built for the bar ( maybe), they have drafted a very solid group of ball players and drinkers. We think the team camaraderie translates to some wins. Rumour is Kyle is giving up drinking for the season to focus on competitive baseball. We know most rumours aren’t true and this one is proof of that.

Steve and Ryan will be looking to improve on last year's rebuilding year. They have some young, up and coming talent through the Cuban and Dominican pipeline soon, but this team could be a year away from being a year away. The Tipster is dubois and we see another rebuilding year. The rumour is that Vegas feels that Steve has been unfocused in his captaincy last season due his role as President. We will see if they can turn it around or if he is impeached and sent down to Del Boca Vista to ride out his remaining years.

Derek took a 1 year hiatus from captain to focus on scouting every player in the league so he would be ready to make his triumphant return to captain with Dale. Reporters have talked about this draft from Randy and Michael whether Verway can have another strong season near the top. We say yes, they have assembled a nice roster and they will again be a force to be reckoned with. The Russell Bros try for a second time at captaining, and let’s hope it goes better this year. They brought in some draft consultants and seem to have put together a stronger squad this year. Advanced analytics show this roster as a top 15 team, so that is promising. Unfortunately it is a 16 team league, which is less promising. We see a rebound for a 500 team here and a higher chance the Russill’s fight each other at a tournament beer tent than a tournament title.

Another new team and if we can judge by the name, they might not be focused on baseball as their primary game. Captains Erwin and Chris have been doing this for a while and they have drafted a balanced team skill, speed, power and fielding. The real question might be the health of Neil, if he is in mid -season form, I think this team could be unstoppable. One of the best pitchers in the game, a solid defense, this team can do it all. We will be counting on Erwin and Chris to mess it all up, we have seen what happens when teams try to sign aging veterans, but I think we will see a good year from these guys.
Deeth & Co – Expected Record 17-17-0
Always usually a powerhouse, this team was a better than average team, but had an even run differential, so they are back to fundamentals. Captains Mike and Brian will be looking to get more out of this re-tooled roster and they seem to have employed a Moneyball strategy. They do not seem to have any of the top 15 power hitters and are focusing on defense and average. Rumor is they have previous knowledge of the 150 ft cone Rule, as they drafted Koopman, who would exemplify a Moneyball draft selection with the new rules. Let’s wait and see how this shakes out, in today’s game we need power, so I am seeing a .500 team here.
Door Dudes – Expected Record – 22-10-2
As a second last place team last year, their ownership was right to make changes. The Russell Bro’s were fired and looking for new work, they brought in the established captains in David Quinn and Mike Nielson. The opposite of Moneyball, this team is top end loaded with 3 of the top 10 in HR’s last year. The rest of the roster looks solid and this team will be a problem, but like every offensive team….can they play great defense and avoid too many strikeouts? The Tipster thinks yes, but the off-season rumours were there was potential salary cap holdouts, so they might come into the season a little cold.
Dependable Home Tech – Expected Record - 15-17-2
The regular season leaders last year are looking to stay on top. The Tipster sees a fall from grace, they have drafted a solid team, but it is hard to go back-to-back regular season league champs. Salary cap concerns have forced them to make some tough lineup decisions. Rumour is many of them were attending the Tom Brady roast and some players got into an altercation with some paparazzi, so we will see if there are suspensions looming.
Gamble Plumbing – Expected Record 23-9-2
Team captains Nate Gamble and Scott Clark look like they have assembled quite a team. Scott is a 5-tool player and Nate is a perennial 5th round pick somehow, which makes for great value in the captain seats. We know they run a new AI analytics team, so this draft looks to have gone well. Rumor is they are one of the pre-season Vegas favorites, but we think there is a likely chance of some heroics and fireworks this season. Hopefully resulting in another successful regular season. Maybe not in the tournaments though. A team to watch one way or another.
GTA Property Inspection – Expected Record 14-19-1
Captains Brad and Tim have come out and said this is the greatest team they have ever assembled. We think they meant drinking wise, but we will see their performance on field and at Qbs and check in on their progress throughout the year. We think they come out of the gate slowly and get better. Rumour is this team is up for sale in the off season as Brad and Tim want to transition to a more corn-hole focused summer. This likely affects team morale.
Maid Clean – Expected Record – 15-15-4
Randy and Mark told the media at the beginning of spring training that they hope this team can compete for some tournament wins. We aren’t so sure unfortunately. Rumor is the Gill brothers will look to take on the title of best set of brothers in the league, despite sounding like an up and coming country music duo.
PhysioLink Rehab - Expected Record - 17-15-2
Coop and Kyle will look to continue their winning streak as the captains with the most QBs winning performances. Anyone drafted onto this team will have a blast. This team isn’t just built for the bar ( maybe), they have drafted a very solid group of ball players and drinkers. We think the team camaraderie translates to some wins. Rumour is Kyle is giving up drinking for the season to focus on competitive baseball. We know most rumours aren’t true and this one is proof of that.
QBs - Expected Record - 13-17-4
Steve and Ryan will be looking to improve on last year's rebuilding year. They have some young, up and coming talent through the Cuban and Dominican pipeline soon, but this team could be a year away from being a year away. The Tipster is dubois and we see another rebuilding year. The rumour is that Vegas feels that Steve has been unfocused in his captaincy last season due his role as President. We will see if they can turn it around or if he is impeached and sent down to Del Boca Vista to ride out his remaining years.
Savvy Plumbing – Expected Record - 14-18-2
Derek took a 1 year hiatus from captain to focus on scouting every player in the league so he would be ready to make his triumphant return to captain with Dale. We don’t expect this will translate to many extra wins however. They say experience and age should be useful in a captain role, but maybe just a little (LOT?) too much of both. We see a solid team, but not sure they can compete for titles. As Mark Twain said “A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.” I think this says it all.
Verwey Automotive – Expected Record - 18-14-2
Reporters have talked about this draft from Randy and Michael whether Verway can have another strong season near the top. We say yes, they have assembled a nice roster and they will again be a force to be reckoned with. Rumours are abound that claim that a certain former Dodgers star is betting on them to win the league ... so it could be a rough year.
Vanderhout Flooring – Expected Record – 18-15-1
Last year they were a middle of the pack team. This year we see an improvement. Rumour is they will be instituting a Bat Flip policy, which should be good for morale, if not a few bench clearing brawls. We think it likely ends up nailing a few innocent batters in on-deck circle and maybe an umpire or 2. If the latter happens, it will have been a successful year by all accounts.
Zion - Expected Record - 17-17-0
The Russell Bros try for a second time at captaining, and let’s hope it goes better this year. They brought in some draft consultants and seem to have put together a stronger squad this year. Advanced analytics show this roster as a top 15 team, so that is promising. Unfortunately it is a 16 team league, which is less promising. We see a rebound for a 500 team here and a higher chance the Russill’s fight each other at a tournament beer tent than a tournament title.
